Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As a General Manager within GLL, I am responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial performance of a multi-functional leisure facility. I lead all aspects of the centre, ensuring we deliver high-quality, inclusive services that align with GLL’s social enterprise values while driving participation, revenue, and community impact. I oversee a wide range of services including fitness, swimming, group exercise, and community programmes, ensuring the centre operates safely, efficiently, and with a strong customer focus. I manage the day-to-day operations of the centre, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, presentation, and customer experience while ensuring all services run in line with company policies and industry standards. I am accountable for financial performance, including budget management, income generation, and cost control, and I drive membership growth, retention, and secondary spend through targeted initiatives and local engagement. I lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team of managers and frontline staff, fostering a positive, high-performing culture focused on accountability and excellent service delivery. I ensure full compliance with health and safety legislation, safeguarding requirements, and operational standards, acting as the Responsible Person and maintaining strong audit readiness. I champion customer experience and inclusivity, building effective relationships with local stakeholders, partners, and community groups to increase participation and accessibility. Through strategic planning and continuous improvement, I implement business plans aligned with organisational objectives, identify opportunities to enhance services, and respond to the evolving needs of the local community, ultimately driving participation in health and wellbeing, ensuring the centre’s long-term sustainability, and strengthening GLL’s reputation as a leading social enterprise leisure provider.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I do enjoy my apprenticeship programme and recognise the value it brings to my development as a General Manager within GLL. The content is relevant to my role and supports my leadership and operational skills, which I can apply in my day-to-day work. However, I sometimes find it challenging to balance the apprenticeship workload alongside the demands of running a busy leisure centre.
Due to the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of my role, it can be difficult to consistently find protected time to focus on coursework, which can lead to pressure when deadlines approach. Despite this, I remain committed to the programme and am working to better integrate my learning into my daily responsibilities, making it more manageable and meaningful.
Overall, I enjoy the apprenticeship and see it as an important part of my development, and I am continuing to improve how I manage my time to get the most out of it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
As I am only at the beginning of the programme, I have not yet developed a significant number of new skills. However, I have started to build on some of my existing knowledge, particularly around reflecting more critically on my role as a General Manager within GLL. The early stages have encouraged me to think more about my leadership approach, decision-making, and how I structure my work.
Although it is still early, I can already see how the programme will support my development over time, and I am beginning to adopt a more reflective and structured approach to my day-to-day responsibilities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
Overall, the programme is well organised and clearly structured, with a logical flow that builds knowledge over time. The modules are set out in a way that is easy to follow, and the expectations around assignments and progress are clear from the outset. As I am still in the early stages, I am beginning to understand how each part of the programme links together and supports my development as a General Manager within GLL.
There is good support in place through my assessor, and the structure of regular check-ins helps keep me on track. However, due to the demands of my role, it can sometimes be challenging to fully engage with the structure as intended, particularly when it comes to keeping up with timelines. Despite this, the programme itself is well set up, and I can see that it will support consistent progress as I move forward.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive good support from my employer, particularly through the allocation of 20% of my working time to complete my apprenticeship coursework, which aligns with the expectations of the programme. This has provided me with a solid foundation to begin managing my workload and engaging with the course effectively in my role as a General Manager within GLL.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GLL to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend GLL to a friend because it offers genuine opportunities for progression and development. Having been with the organisation for 10 years, starting as a receptionist and working my way up through the ranks to a General Manager position, I have experienced first-hand the support and opportunities available to grow a career.
GLL values internal development and provides pathways for individuals who are willing to learn, work hard, and take on new challenges. Throughout my time here, I have been able to build my skills, gain experience across different areas of the business, and progress into leadership roles. The organisation also supports ongoing learning, such as apprenticeships, which further demonstrates its commitment to employee development.
Overall, I would recommend GLL to anyone looking for a long-term career with opportunities to progress, develop new skills, and be part of an organisation that invests in its people.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GLL?

Show genuine passion for people and service. GLL is very customer and community focused. In applications and interviews, it helps to show you actually care about delivering a good experience—not just “doing a job.” Examples from real situations (helping a customer, resolving an issue, supporting a team) go a long way.
