Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
At the Macfarlanes Vacation scheme we were truly immersed at the firm. We sat in two different practice areas and did week for our associate supervisors throughout the week. We also had sessions throughout the week with information about the firm (eg on its ESG practice, technology abilities, different practice areas).
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
We were sitting with an associate during the scheme, which meant that we were given lots of responsibility and real tasks to do. They were very supportive and always happy to explain when tasks were complicated.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
This scheme has developed my critical thinking and analytical skills. I also developed my interpersonal skills by attending meetings and going for coffees with the firm’s lawyers. Finally, i developed my negotiation skills through the group negotiation exercise.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received lots of support. The associates and trainees regularly spent time before each task to explain it to me. I felt very comfortable asking questions if needed.
