Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

3/5
My role is to nurture and care for children aged 3 months to 4 years. My role is to promote their wellbeing and development through planning of activities, observation and assessment. It is also my responsibility to safeguard the children in my care. As a key person I build meaningful relationships with my key children and their families.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

2/5
A lot of workshops and assignments are repetitive - I often find myself answering questions I have already answered in previous assignments. I enjoy planning activities and being observed by my assessor as the feedback afterwards helps me to improve the standard of my practice.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

3/5
I was already in my role for a year before enrolling in my apprenticeship. Because of this, a lot of skills typically learnt by an apprentice I had already acquired making logging off-the-job hours difficult. I have also found learning repetitive at times.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

2/5
I have found my workshops to be very unevenly distributed throughout my apprenticeship (especially compared to other learners enrolled on the same programme) meaning my work load has been very inconsistent.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

2/5
Due to staffing or issues with my workplaces rota, my study days are sometimes cancelled meaning I fall behind in my off-the-job hours.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

3/5
I have regular progress meetings with my tutor which does help to reassure me my progress on track. My tutor also helps me prepare for the next stages of my apprenticeship.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
Learning through workshops and researching strengthens my knowledge which I apply to my daily practice.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Bright Horizons to a friend?

No

Why?

As a company, Bright Horizons have a focus on making money rather than caring for and nurturing children. Constant introduction of new policies and procedures and changes to existing ones make it increasingly harder for early years practitioners to do their jobs in a nurturing way that best benefits the wellbeing of children and staff.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bright Horizons?

Individual pay does not reflect an individuals efforts. An unqualified part-time apprentice may be taking on the role or workload of a qualified or more senior member of staff but this will not be reflected in their pay.
