Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
My role can vary slightly on a day-to-day basis, due to seasonal changes, store layout changes or other factors, but it’s generally consistent. Each week I have 2 hours to complete online modules set by my apprenticeship supervisor, and meet with her roughly on a monthly basis. Besides this, I am often on the shop floor putting out stock or serving customers at the tills. We are also trained and monitored in our customer service, ensuring we are friendly, always looking to upsell and hand out baskets to any customers who need it. My store manager has also put me in charge of certain processes each week, such as date coding which I complete on Thursdays.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I find the work itself of a good level, not overly challenging though I would ideally want more mentally challenging tasks- though that would likely only come with a supervisor role or higher. I think my team is what mostly helps me with looking forward to working more, as I get along with all of them well. However I do work 39 hours a week, which can be quite taxing due to travel and having a lot of housework, leading me to not have as much downtime as I’d like. Though, realistically, these hours work for me and allow me to get everything done that I need to, while feeling fulfilled by the end of the day.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
Before I started this programme, I was quite shy and quiet, so being in a customer facing position has helped a lot in that aspect- though I am still a bit quiet so I need to work on that more. It has also helped me with juggling tasks and time management, as there can be a lot that need to get done in a day.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
I am set tasks to complete each week by my apprenticeship supervisor, with designated time slots to do this set by my store manager. Apart from this, I must work towards learning skills that my assessor will want to see by the end of my apprenticeship, which is generally done on the shop floor, and I can speak to management if necessary to help me

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
They support me as much as they can. Whenever I have questions they answer to the best of their ability, generally leaving me not being left with any questions. Additionally, my store manager has tried his best to make my job more invigorating for me, as I raised concerns about wanting to be able to do more, so he has set me more tasks to do in the week.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
My training provider helps if I have any questions for training. I mostly communicate with her online or in face to face meetings- these happen every month or two months usually. Most of my hands on training is from my management team, with guidance from my training provider to make sure I am meeting goals I need to.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
I feel it helps me understand more about my role as a sales assistant and the importance in what I do for the shop; ensuring we comply with legislation and provide the best experience for our customers. It gives me a more in depth look at the role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

3/5
We do not take part in any extra-curricular activities, this would likely be more for management. For example my store manager has attended a large gathering with other Savers managers where they have gone through awards and have gotten to know eachother more. The most I have done outside of work with the team is going out to bowling around Christmas with them.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Savers Health and Beauty Ltd to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Because the environment is very open and friendly, where I immediately felt welcome upon joining, with the entire team looking after me. The job itself is relatively simple to get to grips with, finding a way to do things that suit you. There are also frequent changes in what we must do, such as having to change the store layout due to seasonal changes, or having to help out with stock take- adding another layer to the job.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Savers Health and Beauty Ltd?

Be prepared and certain that you are looking for a customer facing role, as Savers very much pushes excellent customer service, while you should have good knowledge of products- particularly those behind the counter, such as fragrances.
