Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Talent management to identify and nurture talent. To understand barriers to progression whilst supporting to implement initiatives which strengthen leadership pipelines across the organisation. Coach and mentor staff across the Brigade providing 1:1 coaching and mentoring sessions. Supporting the Equality Support Group 'Fairness' in creating an organisation which is inclusive, provides development opportunities and a supportive space for ethic minority staff members.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme is enjoyable, it's interesting, rewarding and supports professional and personal development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

The biggest lesson I have learned is the difference between coaching and mentoring. I have coached and mentored in previous roles and now have a comprehensive understanding of what coaching is and what it is not. I have developed existing skills and can frame conversations using suitable coaching models. I have improved my self awareness, emotional intelligence, the ability to have meaningful conversations which have a lasting impact and initiate change. I am also acutely aware of my strengths and where I am best placed to make a tangible difference.

The programme is very well structured however, learning especially in relation to theorists and models, I believe could be given more time to explore and understand.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

At times work pressures have impacted the allocated time I have scheduled to work on my apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support received has been of a great standard, regular 1:1's, progress reviews, end point assessment workshops, effective and swift email communication has all supported my journey.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification supports in many ways, including effective communication skills, self awareness and having the ability to use powerful questioning to respectfully challenge with the aim of identifying solutions.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes
Why?
I work in a supportive environment, working conditions are flexible and opportunities to develop and grow are offered. The Brigade is made up of 3 different entities, Operational, Control and Fire Rescue Staff this allows for a variety of learning options and career routes.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to London Fire Brigade?
Culture change is a top priority, a priority which the London Fire Brigade is actively taking the steps to improve. New entrants should have apply with a frame of mind which supports, encourages and advocates change.
