Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
During 1st year we have switched between being in the workshop, (4 days a week) developing our skills on different rotations needed for the BTEC and 1 day working on the classroom based rotations.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
For the first year I have thoroughly enjoyed developing my skills and improving my knowledge. Whilst completing the rotations as I have deepened my knowledge and gain new skills that I am able to apply to everyday life.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes I have definitely gained new skills in areas that before I had either had some knowledge on and never had an opportunity to try or that I had no knowledge on it. I now feel confident in 90% of the rotations I have the opportunity to learn and could confidently explain and help my peers if they needed it.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is organised well and the structure allows easy transitions when the rotations change.
The only thing I would say could be to put the Maths rotation before the Mechanical Principles, as it would've been easier to have the basic understanding of maths before going into a harder mathematical topic.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Receive a good level of support from BMW, they make sure to hold meetings with all apprentices to discuss what's going in terms of the business, how we are doing with the BTEC, if we need additional support and what they expect from us and how we can improve.
They also schedule 1 to 1s every 3 months to give feedback to us as individuals.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The support from the college is good, they hold performance reviews to discuss how we are doing with the BTEC, if we need additional support and what they expect from us and how we can improve. The people we have to support us at the training school are very friendly and make it easy to talk to them.
When it comes to tutors and assessors most of them have the knowledge and skills to teach us what we need to learn in a way that is easy to understand. They are also approachable and easy to talk to when you don't understand an area of the topic you are learning, and will take the time to explain it again and show you until you are confident.
However, there are some tutors who lack the skill of articulating what they are trying to teach and have little communication with us about how we are doing in that subject and if we need to improve. And there are also some that lack to knowledge to teach the subject as a whole and struggle to answer questions and show us what we are supposed to be learning.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
From what I have observed around the business, the rotations we have been completing in the workshop are mostly relevant to what we will asked to do in our job roles.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
As a first year apprentice I haven't taken the time to look into any extra-curricular activities around the business but I have heard that there are opportunities for this.
