Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an Apprentice Surveyor within the Commercial and Industrial Property Management team at Savills. My role involves supporting the day to day running of properties to ensure they are managed efficiently, remain compliant, and meet both client and tenant requirements.
On a day-to-day basis, my responsibilities include dealing with tenant queries, coordinating maintenance issues, and liaising with contractors to ensure repairs are completed. I assist in the preparation and issuing of service charge budgets and help monitor expenditure throughout the year. I also undertake property inspections to ensure buildings are being maintained in accordance with lease obligations and report on any issues identified. These tasks support the smooth operation and professional management of the property portfolio while contributing to my ongoing development as part of the apprenticeship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my programme to a great extent. The apprenticeship provides a good balance between practical, day to day experience and academic learning, which helps reinforce my understanding of commercial and industrial property management. The exposure to real responsibilities, alongside support from the wider team, has made the programme engaging and beneficial for my professional development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have learnt a number of new skills and continued to develop existing ones. As a first-year apprentice, I have built a strong foundation in key functional skills such as communication, organisation, and time management through daily interaction with tenants, contractors, and colleagues. I have also developed my understanding of commercial and industrial property management processes, including service charge budgets, handling tenant queries, and carrying out property inspections. These experiences have helped me gain confidence, improve my professional judgement, and apply academic learning in a practical working environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is well organised and structured, particularly for someone at an early stage in their career. As a first year apprentice, having a clear framework between work responsibilities, academic learning, and on-the-job training has been very helpful. The combination of structured study, regular support from my manager and team, and exposure to day-to-day property management tasks allows me to develop gradually and build confidence over time. Overall, the programme provides a supportive and manageable structure that supports both learning and professional development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer. As part of the programme, I am buddied up with another apprentice, which has been particularly helpful as it provides day to day guidance and reassurance from someone at a similar stage in their career. In addition to this, there is always support available from experienced surveyors and wider support staff within the team, who are approachable and willing to help with queries or provide guidance when needed. This supportive environment has helped me to settle into the role, build confidence, and develop my skills effectively as a first-year apprentice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. Through the University of the Built Environment (previously UCEM), I have an Apprenticeship Outcomes Officer who regularly checks in with both me and my line manager to go through my progress and make sure I’m on track. I also receive support from my lecturers and other university support teams, who are there to help if I have any questions about coursework or my studies. This support has been really helpful in balancing work and learning during my first year.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The Real Estate Management course links closely to the work I am doing day to day as an Apprentice Surveyor, particularly within commercial and industrial property management. Topics covered in my studies, such as leases, service charges, property management principles, and professional practice, help me better understand the reasons behind the tasks I complete at work. This has made me more confident in dealing with tenant queries, assisting with service charge budgets, and understanding property inspections. As a first-year apprentice, the qualification is helping me build a strong foundation of knowledge that I can apply directly to my role and continue to develop as I gain more experience.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are lots of extra‑curricular activities to get involved in at Savills, which is really good. The company offers a wide range of social and networking opportunities, including sports teams, charity and fundraising days, and professional networking events. These activities make it easier to meet people across different teams and offices and help you feel part of the wider business. As a first‑year apprentice, it’s been great to see so many opportunities to get involved, socialise, and build connections outside of normal day‑to‑day work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Savills to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Savills because of the size and scale of the company and the opportunities that come with it. Savills is a global business with a wide range of teams, sectors, and locations, which means there are lots of chances to grow, develop, and move within the company over time. As an apprentice, it’s reassuring to know that there are clear career pathways and long‑term opportunities, whether that’s progressing professionally, gaining qualifications, or working in different areas of the business. The supportive environment and exposure to such a large organisation make it a great place to start a career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Savills?
I’d recommend being keen, open to learning, and not being afraid to ask questions. Savills is a big company with lots of experienced people, so getting involved, building relationships, and showing enthusiasm really makes a difference. It’s also important to be organised and proactive, especially when balancing work alongside studying as an apprentice. I’d also say that getting relevant work experience is really valuable, as this is how I was able to secure my role. It helps you understand the industry better and shows that you’re genuinely interested. Taking opportunities and being willing to step outside your comfort zone can really help you get the most out of the role.
