Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BDO?
BDO Reading is a great place to start your career. There is a supportive, community feel in the office, and there is a clear progression pathway.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Assist the audit team with testing financial statement areas, and documenting this process. I enjoy learning how to test new parts of the financial statements, particularly when they are challenging or complex, coming to the conclusion is satisfying.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
You are able to slot into each team, filling in where they need either by shadowing a senior or being given a less complex area to work on alone. As the BDO culture involves sitting in teams, active collaboration and interaction, it is good to get live feedback and help, which means you can contribute more meaningfully.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
I think the salary is very reasonable considering as part of the graduate scheme we are earning a fully compensated qualification.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
There is a clear pathway to progress up the company and remain in audit, but it is also clear what the opportunities could be when moving into industry. Earning the ACA qualification opens doors to a wide range of successful careers.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
Every day I learn new things. This is by completing training, attending college, and being coached by more senior team members. This means that I can constantly develop, and implement the new skills I am learning in a supported environment.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
BDO have a buddy system, pairing new starters with people in the year above. My buddy has been great at welcoming me to the company and teaching me the things I need to know. We also have people manager reviews, they are there to support.
How is your work-life balance?
3/5
It is difficult as we are expected to be in office 5 days a week, meaning the commute is time consuming. However, there is a good culture around overtime, meaning this doesn't take over my evenings like it can in this industry.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
The office culture is open, collaborative, and supportive. Hot-desking helps achieve this, and all colleagues, even up to partners, seem approachable and interested in the mutual success of the office.
How would you rate BDO initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
3/5
I don't know enough to comment.
How would you rate BDO CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
3/5
I don't know enough to comment.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a good place to work, with supportive colleagues, good career development, and continuous learning opportunities.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
I didn't have much of an expectation of what the role would involve, but the recruitment process has framed it similarly to what my experience has been.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BDO?
Ensure you understand audit and specifically what sets BDO apart from competitor firms, and why in particular you want to work at BDO.
