Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was consulting on all aspects of the Strategy and Operations Process for clients at Deloitte. This included business transformation projects, restructuring, and strategizing future moves. I worked with senior executive leaders at our clients. I had regular meetings with clients, scoping out their requirements. I also dealt with the slide packs in Powerpoint, having responsibility for creating visually appealing slides that could tell a story succinctly and recommend a solution to all of our clients.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a lot of responsibility when considering the fact that I had not done any prior commercial work experience. This responsibility involved speaking directly to clients, making my own recommendations, and managing relationships with different stakeholders. I was responsible for preparing several slide decks and I was expected to tailor the to different clients. I also had responsibility for overseeing the project management side of things on one of our projects we were working on.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learn a lot of skills, both technical and non technical. On the technical side of things I learnt a lot of data visualisation techniques in software such as SQL, Tableau and Alteryx. There was training on the traditional Microsoft Office products, particularly Powerpoint, which was insightful because we were trained on how to create commercially appealing slide decks. I also learn how to communicate effectively with senior managers both within the company and outside.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a lot of support and guidance. My managers and colleagues were very welcoming of me in terms of my input, which made me feel confident in my abilities. I was supported in being given access to high quality training opportunities, both on the technical side of things and also in developing my soft skills such as communication. This was delivered through several different workshops as well as on the job training during projects.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture at Deloitte is great. It is full of high achieving and ambitious individuals. This created a good atmosphere for colleagues to bounce ideas off each other. I really enjoyed interacted with colleagues of all grades during social events. The hours are long which is a downside but I feel like this created more opportunities to get to know my co workers. I think Deloitte prides itself on its reputation amongst its many clients.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my internship at Deloitte. I was between my penultimate and final years of university so this was a good opportunity for me to explore my options with a view to landing a job in consulting on graduation. I managed to successfully do so. However, even if I had not done so I would have still said I thoroughly enjoyed the internship because it gave me the skills set I needed for a career in consulting.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
Try and think about what strand of consulting you want to go into. Deloitte has a Monitor Deloitte section and a Strategy and Operations division. The former is often considered to be the more prestigious but it is not necessarily correct for everyone. There is ample opportunity for you to move between divisions as well, not just within Consulting but also to Deloitte's other functions in professional services such as tax, audit and assurance.
