Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Merseyside Police Alarms Officer, I manage and administer police‑monitored alarm systems, ensuring they comply with NPCC policy and local procedures. My day‑to‑day role involves processing new applications, issuing and maintaining URNs, supporting installers and the public with guidance, updating records accurately, and overseeing compliance to ensure appropriate and efficient police response. I also handle enquiries, audit information, and contribute to the smooth running of the Alarms Unit.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme — it has been a brilliant experience so far. The content is genuinely interesting, and I can clearly see how it supports my development in my role. What makes it even more enjoyable is my tutor, who is excellent. Their support, encouragement, and engaging approach make the learning feel positive, motivating, and much easier to understand. Overall, the programme has boosted my confidence and made me excited about progressing further.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have developed a wide range of new skills and strengthened my existing ones throughout the programme. I’ve improved my organisational, communication and time‑management skills, and I now have a much deeper understanding of how organisations work, including the roles of key stakeholders and how different departments link together. I’ve also gained more in‑depth knowledge of relevant policies and procedures, as well as a better understanding of the force’s overall strategy and vision. This has helped me see how my role fits into the bigger picture and how the work I do contributes to wider organisational goals.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is very well organised and structured. The sessions are planned clearly, the learning materials are easy to follow, and each module builds naturally on the last. I always know what is expected of me and when, which makes it much easier to stay on track with my workload. The structure is consistent and supportive, and my tutor helps guide the process smoothly, making the whole programme feel well‑managed and easy to engage with.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer, especially from my line manager. They are very understanding of my apprenticeship commitments and regularly check in to make sure I have the time, resources, and guidance I need. My manager is always approachable and encourages my development, which makes balancing my role and the programme much easier. Overall, the support I receive has had a really positive impact on my progress and confidence.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications. My tutor is extremely helpful, approachable, and always willing to give guidance whenever I need it. They explain things clearly, check in regularly, and provide feedback that genuinely helps me improve. The resources are easy to access, and I feel fully supported throughout the programme, which makes completing my apprenticeship much more manageable and enjoyable.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification has helped me perform significantly better in my role. It has strengthened my organisational, communication, and problem‑solving skills and given me a much deeper understanding of how the organisation works and how my role contributes to wider force objectives. The programme has also pushed me out of my comfort zone in a positive way, helping me grow in confidence and approach tasks with more independence and professionalism. Overall, the qualification directly supports my development and enhances the way I carry out my responsibilities in the Alarms Unit.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There aren’t any formal extra‑curricular activities available where I work, such as social groups or sports teams that I would wish to engage in-However, I have taken the initiative to push myself outside of my comfort zone by attending regional meetings with other police forces, which has helped me build confidence and expand my professional network. I am also working towards my Workplace Needs Assessor course, and I actively contribute to improving processes by offering recommendations for positive changes within the department.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Merseyside Police to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would definitely recommend Merseyside Police to a friend. I previously worked for the organisation and chose to return after ten years away, and coming back truly felt like coming home. Once you become part of Merseyside Police, you become part of a family, and there is no feeling quite like it. The sense of belonging, support, and pride in the work we do is something really special, and it’s a big part of why I’m glad to be back.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Merseyside Police?
My biggest advice for anyone applying to Merseyside Police is to be yourself and be prepared to work hard, but know that the effort is absolutely worth it. Show your passion for helping people and your willingness to learn-the organisation values commitment and integrity. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, because Merseyside Police offers so many opportunities to grow, develop and build confidence. Also, take advantage of any training or support offered to you, as it will help you settle in quickly. Most importantly, be open‑minded and ready to become part of a team that supports each other-once you join Merseyside Police, you really do become part of the family.
