Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Building Surveying apprentice in London, I split my time between site inspections and desk-based reporting, supporting senior surveyors. I would assist with condition surveys, defect diagnosis, schedules of dilapidations and manage construction projects, producing clear reports and asset data, mainly with the primary goal of adding value to property. I would also help with specifications, construction project tenders, and contractor/client liaison on refurb projects, using AutoCAD and Microsoft 365 while developing knowledge of UK Building Regulations, CDM and H&S.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I genuinely enjoyed the programme. The mix of site inspections, technical reporting and project support keeps the work varied and hands‑on. The mentoring from senior surveyors, coupled with real responsibility, means I’m learning quickly and building confidence while working towards RICS. I especially like diagnosing defects and seeing refurbishment projects progress from specification through to completion.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve developed massively. Starting from scratch and now working confidently as a chartered building surveyor. I’ve learnt core technical skills and built solid knowledge. I’ve also grown in stakeholder communication, time management and site professionalism, with mentoring and shadowing.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well structured and clear progression. There are defined milestones, all with the goals of preparing you to meet RICS competencies, regular reviews, and a consistent study day.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Excellent support. Accessible line management, mentoring from chartered surveyors, funded training, protected study time, and prompt feedback. However, you must earn this support by keeping a rigid system so you can deliver your company-related work on time, to earn the support for your studies.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Strong support. There are responsive tutors, constructive assignment feedback, and workshops that align with my day-to-day work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Directly applicable. Modules relate to the services offered as part of my day-to-day role as a building surveyor.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes. Savills boasts a variety of communities, events, and clubs centred around sport, health and fitness, and many other general interests. There is plenty of opportunity socially as well as professionally.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Savills to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I’d recommend Savills to a friend because the apprenticeship is well‑structured with clear milestones and genuine responsibility from day one. Mentoring from chartered surveyors and exposure to varied, high‑quality projects (across London and beyond) accelerate your learning, while protected study time and CPD make balancing work and qualifications manageable. The culture is supportive and professional, with plenty of opportunities to get involved.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Savills?
When applying for a building surveying degree apprenticeship at Savills, or any degree apprenticeship, you must understand the form of surveying you are signing up for. There are many types of surveying, each of which are very different. Many newer candidates often make the assumption that all surveying types are the same, and it doesn't matter which one you apply for. While there is some overlap, ensure you understand the role you are applying for and conduct your own learning of what is required and the knowledge surrounding the role.
