Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role covers data protection and freedom of information compliance. I am responsible for ensuring compliance with the provisions of the UK GDPR and DPA, developing policies and procedures, providing advice and assistance on data processing, and handling Subject Access and Freedom of Information requests.
Day to day involves dealing with data breaches, assessing FOI and SAR responses for exemptions and sending responses, maintaining central records such as the Records of Processing activities, and advising on data sharing and processing activities.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The programme has been very enjoyable and useful. It has allowed me to challenge myself in areas that I previously had little knowledge on and has helped improve my work at the Council.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have improved my skills in relation to risk management and assessment and developed skills in relation to privacy programme management which has helped me to implement processes and procedures at the Council. It has also helped me develop my training and presentation skills and has improved the face to face training that I deliver.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is very well structured, building the foundational basis and then developing the areas that are needed to be an effective data protection and information governance officer.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has been very supportive throughout. The council values apprenticeships and supports officers who want to progress down these paths. Managers provide one to one support when needed and the HR team runs an apprenticeship workshop which is a great opportunity to network with other apprentices and discuss what further support could be provided. The HR team also organise further sessions to help apprentices, such as academic writing sessions which are invaluable to apprentices who do not come from an academic background.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The training provider supports me well. I have 6 weekly meetings with my coach along with sessions at the end of each module which cover the content. They are also available via email when needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification has helped me become a better data and information governance officer and has supported me in improving my performance across multiple areas. The qualification acts as a good introduction to many areas, however more depth in certain areas would be useful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many extra curricular activities at work from the SKDC 5 aside football team to social events put on by HR for all staff. The Wellbeing team also run lots of events throughout the year for staff.
