Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I genuinely love my role at South Kesteven District Council. I am involved with a range of projects, ranging from electric vehicle charging infrastructure and decarbonisation to biodiversity and nature-focused initiatives. I have had the opportunity to feed into written strategies, which has required a significant level of stakeholder engagement.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am currently being supported through a Level 4 Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Practitioner Standard, which complements my day-to-day role very well. The subjects covered have tied nicely into ongoing Council initiatives and I have had the opportunity to develop my skillset and understanding of sustainability in the public sector. I have enjoyed my time on programme and look forward to End Point Assessment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

My communication and confidence has improved through a combination of on-programme study and activities focusing on the practical implementation of these new skills. I have had the opportunity to network, engage with stakeholders and manage projects within the remit of my role. This has given me a practical insight into culture and change management, and how to lead more effectively.

My programme is very well structured. The content has been paced well, and has been easily applicable to my day-to-day role within the sustainability and climate change team.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer has been very supportive. My line manager has been engaged with my progress throughout my time on programme, and the HR team is approachable and helpful. My time for Off The Job is respected and I feel trusted to manage my time effectively.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I have learned important elements of leadership, change management and how to effectively deliver on projects. This is especially relevant to my role as a Project Support Officer, even more so when considering sustainability in the public sector.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

The team at South Kesteven District Council is effective when organising staff wellbeing and social events. Apprenticeships are supported by a regular meeting of our internal Apprenticeship Panel, which allows a space for apprentices from all walks of the Council to come together and discuss key topics, concerns and learn new skills.
