Overall Rating

The Overall Rating is the average of all the ratings given in each category. We take those individual ratings and combine them into one final score!

4/5 - Overview of Role
5/5 - Skills Development
3.4/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
- Project Management: campaigns, NPD launches, social channels
- Digital Marketing: website updates, social media management, agency management, PRM, data acquisition competitions
- Budget Management
- Performance tracking: competitor tracking
- Team admin: sample orders, influencer boxes
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
- Great variety of experience: ability to rotate roles half way through the programme which was of huge benefit!
- Often allocated conventional "apprentice" tasks which weren't challenging (before I pushed for more project ownership)
- Poor work/life balance: teams were often at full capacity, working to the line. Having to then complete university work on top of a late finish/ early start was challenging.
- Generally worked in a really supportive environment with a combination of very experienced colleagues and other apprentices/ grads/ placement students

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes! The role rotation at the 1.5 year mark really helped to push my development and grow my knowledge. I believe this no longer happens for Level 6 apprenticeships at Unilever which is a shame.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Support from the Future careers team was fantastic when joining the programme but this became less & less time I spent within the business. It became challenging to know who to contact, get a response to any queries and no/little support with what happens after finishing the apprenticeship. Received many mixed/ unclear messages.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
As per the above, HR/ Future Careers support was below average. I struggled to find the right person to speak to when I really needed it. I felt I supported the Future Careers team more than I got back!
On the other hand, my direct team and managers were incredibly supportive. If I needed extra time due to tight deadlines and heavy workloads, they were generally quite flexible.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
The support from University was unacceptable and made my final year twice as hard as it needed to be. I found I spent a lot of my time (that should've been allocated to completing my assignments) trying to dissect conflicting communications and get answers. It made the experience incredibly stressful, especially throughout the process of completing my EPA.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The overall content of the degree was great and provided a great knowledge base for my everyday work. There were however some issues with lecturers, for example a finance practitioner was allocated to our "Creative Advertising" module.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes!
- Charity walk
- Charity football game
- Future career recruitment support ie. attending outreach events

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Despite some of my less positive experiences, I have overall learn a huge amount through my apprenticeship scheme & through a huge amount of hard work, landed a great job within the global team too.
I have worked in highly motived teams with inspirational managers and across some very exciting campaigns too! I've been fortunate enough to have managers who have trusted me to work on large projects and take ownership.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
- Network & build relationships! Use the experience as an opportunity to speak to different people across the business to help you to understand what does/ doesn't interest you
- Work hard. Sounds cliché but ultimately this is what will get you noticed within the business. This is really important when it comes to building your CV and getting your next opportunity.
- Ask questions & be inquisitive always!
