Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves keeping an eye on the overall workplace by carrying out light inspections, reviewing any incident or near‑miss reports, and addressing questions from employees who need guidance on safe practices. Much of the day may be spent updating basic documentation and communicating with different teams.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy my programme, I think we are given lots of opportunities to explore different areas of the business, especially with our placements, allowing us to learn and grow in a short amount of time. There is a strong team of apprentice managers meaning we are always well supported and my department is always happy to give me things to do and learn about all departmental topics.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt risk assessment skills as I have learnt how to identify hazards even when they are not prominent dangers. I have developed my presentation and communication skills as I have engaged with employees at all levels and presented to my team. I have also developed my organisational skills, learning where each file goes and documenting important information.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is well structured as I have a basic understanding of what placements I will carry out. However, some departments are more organised than others.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive lots of support from my employer, everyone is always happy to answer any questions I may have and we have monthly meetings scheduled with the apprentice training school to be able to ask any questions and get business updates.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Most replies from tutors are quick and efficient. Support is good as we have designated training co-ordinators to support us through our apprenticeship, we have progress meetings every 3 months and they are always happy to help, even popping in on college days to say hi.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification is quite helpful as it is very business orientated, they always relate the content we learn about to our businesses which is very helpful; we learn about a range of topics from finance to marketing so we can understand different sectors of the company.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are many extra-curricular activities for apprentices to get involved in, for example, charity champions, apprentice insight, apprentice network. So apprentices have lots of opportunities to connect with other apprentices and help make a difference not only to the business but also for charities whilst developing their own skills.
