Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
On a day to day I spend most of my time utilising GIS Software to review land for renewable energy developments. This system has functionality to create dashboards and other outputs that are shared with clients and landowners. These tools are beneficial for when I spend time approaching landowners. I also work on assessing the viability of projects by collating key documents e.g. planning applications, grid feasibilities to help understand if projects can be passed on/sold.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy most of the work I do although the workload is high which can cause pressure to complete in time and feel I have developed in key skills. The team is small so the flexibility to work from home is limited, as an apprentice you are required to ask which often isn't approved. I often find I am in the office when my team are not in.
However as the job is very specific it is challenging as the degree is real estate management so there is often little relevance to the job role.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
There is an opportunity to learn many new skills, specifically with our GIS Systems. The only downside is the processes do change often which can mean there is extra data collection/admin involved which often is not skills development.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The university degree is structured well. The platform with all the resources and lectures is easy to work your way through as broken down into weeks. There are a few months in between modules where you have to complete off the job training which is unstructured but their is support in place if needed. The only downside is the degree is not a relevant as it could be to the role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Lots of help from ex-apprentices/current apprentices in my team. When I first joined there was not any guides etc for apprentices and grads to learn the system etc. However with the help of the other apprentice I was able to pick up our systems at a quicker pace than if I was doing it by myself. Since then we have implemented guidance notes, checklists etc to offer more support for new apprentices/grads/interns etc. The apprenticeship team are also excellent, with one of them assigned to your level, which means you get frequent 1 to 1 support whenever necessary.
As our team is also small we currently do not have a qualified surveyor in our team. The closest is another apprentice who is in his 3rd year. This can be challenging as the learning opportunities are sometimes limited. That being said there are other surveyors who are willing to help, especially when you take your APC.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The support through the university is good. There are wellbeing and academic teams who are available for 1 to 1 meetings when required. You also have regular meetings with your apprentice outcomes office and line manager to track your progress at work and with your degree. These are helpful to raise any issues you may have with the course and your responsibilities at work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
As the role is quite specific it is challenging to apply the degree to the day to day work. That being said it does help to give you a more holistic overview of surveying which can be used/applied in future roles.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes! There are many events that you can get involved in.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Savills to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall the programs provides a great learning opportunity with many new experiences you may not get if attending university. Very friendly atmosphere with many people who are willing to help you.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Savills?
Have a wide variety of different experiences that show what you have gained from them. Whether these are academic or personal, showing what you have learnt and what you are excited to learn is key!
