Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
In my role as a Data Scientist apprentice, I support different parts of the business by helping them understand and use their data more effectively. On a typical day, I work with datasets from our internal systems, cleaning and organising the information so it’s ready for analysis. I often build dashboards and reports that help teams track performance or spot patterns in their data.
A big part of my job is also working with stakeholders – understanding what questions they’re trying to answer, turning that into something analytical, and then explaining the results in a clear, practical way. Alongside this, I regularly build my skills in coding, data engineering and visualisation so I can contribute more effectively as projects grow in complexity.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Having just finished my data science apprenticeship, I’d say it was a really positive experience overall. I had the chance to work with different teams and see different sides of the business, which helped me understand how data is used in a real organisation. Over the three years, I built a solid foundation in data science, from data cleaning and engineering through to visualisation, tool building and supporting teams with analytical models.
There were times when the work could feel repetitive or more support‑focused rather than “pure” data science, but that’s also part of learning how data fits into day‑to‑day operations. Overall, the programme gave me valuable experience and helped me grow technically and professionally.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes — throughout my apprenticeship I’ve learnt a wide range of new skills and built on the ones I started with. I’ve become highly skilled in Power BI, from building reports to creating more advanced dashboards. I’ve also spent a lot of time learning about AI and have seen how quickly it has evolved during my programme, which has helped me understand how to use these tools effectively in my work.
On the technical side, I’ve gained experience in Azure Databricks and developed skills across the full data science cycle — from data cleaning and engineering to visualisation, tool development and model building. All of these skills have given me a strong foundation that will be really valuable in future roles.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
At the start, the programme was still fairly new, so the structure was quite open and based largely on what I was interested in working on. As time went on, it became more organised and aligned better with what I was learning at university. Not everything matched perfectly, but that encouraged me to look for new projects and tasks that would help me upskill and get the most value out of the apprenticeship. Overall, the structure improved over time and gave me enough flexibility to shape my own learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I received a lot of support from my employer throughout the apprenticeship. They were always open to letting me explore the areas I was interested in and encouraged me to take on work that would help me progress. I was given the time I needed to focus on my degree when required, while still having opportunities to work on meaningful projects that helped me build my skills.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I received a lot of support from my training provider throughout the apprenticeship. We had an individual mentor who regularly checked in with us to see how we were progressing with assignments and any apprenticeship‑related tasks, which helped make sure everything stayed on track for deadlines. We also attended university once a semester, which gave us valuable face‑to‑face time to discuss any blockers or issues and get the guidance we needed to move forward with our degree.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The degree has definitely been beneficial and is one of the main foundations that helped me perform better in my role. It gave me the core knowledge and understanding across the data science cycle, which I could then apply in real work situations. The combination of theory from university and hands‑on experience at work was especially valuable — even though it wasn’t always easy to directly link everything, it still helped me build confidence and develop the skills I needed.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are plenty of extra‑curricular activities to get involved in. There are regular events for apprentices as well as activities within your own teams. There’s always something going on, whether it’s social meet‑ups, learning sessions, or networking opportunities. Personally, I joined the football group, which plays weekly, and that’s been a great way to stay active and meet people outside my usual day‑to‑day work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would definitely recommend Unilever to a friend. It’s a huge organisation with so many opportunities to grow, learn and connect with people. There are great networking opportunities both within your own team and across other areas of the business, and you get the chance to work with colleagues from all over the world. You’re also able to gain real, valuable experience by working with different teams, and the skills you develop are transferable to any future role or company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
My biggest piece of advice is to stay curious and take initiative. Unilever looks for people who are genuinely interested in learning and willing to get stuck into new areas. It really helps if you can show both your technical interest and your ability to work well with others, as collaboration across different teams is a big part of the culture. And most importantly, be yourself — Unilever appreciates people who bring their own personality, ideas and perspective to the table.
