Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Supporting children aged 0-18 with speech, language, and communication difficulties in schools, homes, clinics, and nurseries. Shadowing speech and language therapists in clinic, nursery, schools, and on home visits. Observing assessments (speech, language, and swallow). Booking and carrying out speech therapy sessions. 22.5 hours (3 days) a week on the job working and learning, 7.5 hours (1 day) a week studying or on placement, and 7.5 hours (1 day) a week at university in-person lectures.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The Trust is incredibly supportive and I am able to access a variety of high quality opportunities to learn on the job and engage in activities alongside qualified therapists. I am given time to complete my study (assignments, revision, placement) as well as attend lectures once a week.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Learnt more about the role of a therapist in different settings, rationale for assessments, how to conduct and score assessments, how to set therapy targets, other professionals therapists work with as part of their role, how therapists communicate with clients and their families. Developed my communication and time management skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Consideration is given to the structure of the programme and I am given time and support to complete assignments as well as opportunities to observe relevant practice linked to my study e.g. FEEs when studying anatomy and physiology, language assessments as part of paediatric teaching.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The Trust is incredibly supportive and I am able to access a variety of high quality opportunities to learn on the job and engage in activities alongside qualified therapists. I am given time to complete my study (assignments, revision, placement) as well as attend lectures. I have a workplace mentor who supports me to gain relevant clinical experience on the job and is understanding and empathic to the pressures of completing a degree apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Yes, plenty of opportunities including social activities, conferences, careers fayres at schools.

It's a fantastic Trust which has both adult and paediatric teams in both inpatient and community settings meaning there's a range of opportunities for learning. It's well resourced with highly skilled and competent colleagues who support and mentor.
