Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
A Creative Packaging Design Degree Apprentice works at the intersection of design, sustainability, and brand experience, supporting the development of innovative packaging from concept to prototype. Day‑to‑day, this involves sketching and refining design ideas, creating digital artwork, experimenting with materials, and helping produce mock‑ups for testing. I collaborate closely with designers, engineers, and marketing teams to ensure packaging is functional, manufacturable, and visually aligned with brand identity. Alongside practical project work, I document designs, gather feedback, analyse user or consumer insights, and balance this with my university studies, gradually building technical design skills, creativity, and industry understanding.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my role as a Creative Packaging Designer because it lets me combine creativity with real-world problem‑solving. I love being able to turn ideas into tangible designs, experimenting with shapes, materials, and visual elements to create packaging that’s both beautiful and functional. Working closely with designers, engineers, and brand teams keeps the work dynamic and collaborative, and seeing my concepts evolve into prototypes is genuinely rewarding. The role constantly pushes me to think innovatively, consider sustainability, and develop new skills, which makes every day feel purposeful and inspiring.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Over the last three years as a Creative Packaging Design Apprentice, I’ve developed a strong blend of technical, creative, and professional skills. I’ve built confidence in using design software, creating prototypes, and exploring different materials to bring concepts to life. I’ve also grown my understanding of sustainability, consumer needs, and how packaging must balance aesthetics with functionality. Working closely with designers, engineers, and marketing teams has strengthened my communication and collaboration skills, while managing real projects has improved my organisation, problem‑solving, and ability to think creatively under pressure.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is generally well organised, but at times the structure can feel rigid and slightly repetitive, with some overlap between modules. While the progression of content is logical, certain topics could be better paced to avoid periods where the workload feels uneven or compressed. The balance between theory and practice is effective overall, though some modules would benefit from clearer links between academic content and practical application. Despite these issues, the programme provides a solid foundation and offers opportunities for independent learning and development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have received excellent support from my employer, which has played a significant role in my development. I am given the time and flexibility needed to balance work responsibilities with academic commitments, and there is a clear understanding of the demands of the programme. Regular guidance, encouragement, and opportunities to apply what I learn in a real working environment have helped me grow in confidence and capability. This consistent support has made the apprenticeship both manageable and rewarding.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. Tutors are approachable and responsive when guidance is needed, and regular check‑ins help ensure I stay on track academically. Learning materials and resources are clearly structured, making it easier to manage coursework alongside work commitments. Overall, the support provided helps me feel confident in my progress and well supported throughout the programme.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification has helped improve my understanding of my role and provided useful theoretical knowledge, but its impact on my day‑to‑day performance has been somewhat limited. While certain aspects of the course support my development, some content feels quite broad and not always directly applicable to the specific tasks or challenges I face at work. I often find that practical learning through experience has a greater influence on my performance than the qualification alone. However, the qualification does provide a helpful foundation that supports longer‑term professional growth rather than immediate skill improvement.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a range of extra‑curricular opportunities available at Unilever Port Sunlight R&D, including networking activities, learning events, and employee‑led initiatives, which support personal development and any hobbies you wish to do more or learn.

Yes

Unilever offers a supportive and inclusive working environment with strong opportunities for learning and development. The company values its employees and encourages growth through real responsibility, collaboration, and exposure to industry‑leading research and innovation. I also appreciate the focus on wellbeing, flexibility, and sustainability, which makes the workplace feel purposeful as well as professionally rewarding.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
I would advise anyone applying to Unilever to take the time to really understand the company’s values and purpose, as these are genuinely reflected in the way people work. Being open, curious, and willing to learn is important, especially in a fast‑paced and collaborative environment. It’s also helpful to show enthusiasm for sustainability, innovation, and teamwork, and to be confident in asking questions and seeking opportunities once you’re in the role.
