I recently completed my HGV apprenticeship and had a really positive experience throughout. The workshop team were very supportive and always willing to help when I needed guidance. I was given plenty of opportunities to learn and get hands-on experience working on different vehicles, which helped me build both my skills and confidence.
The training alongside the practical work in the workshop worked well and helped me understand the job properly. I always felt like part of the team rather than just an apprentice.
Overall it was a great experience and I’m grateful for the support I received during my apprenticeship. I’m happy to say I’ve now been offered a full-time position with the company, which shows how well the apprenticeship prepares you for working in the industry.

I really enjoyed my apprenticeship programme. It gave me a good balance between learning the theory and getting hands-on experience in the workshop. Being able to work alongside experienced technicians helped me develop my skills and confidence a lot. I felt supported throughout the programme and was given the opportunity to learn and improve every day. Overall it was a very positive experience and it has helped me start my career in the HGV industry.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have learned a lot of new skills during my apprenticeship and also developed the skills I already had. Working in the HGV workshop gave me hands-on experience with servicing, inspections, and repairs on a range of vehicles. I also improved my diagnostic and problem-solving skills by working alongside experienced technicians and learning from them day to day.
Over time my confidence grew and I became more comfortable carrying out tasks independently while still knowing I had support if I needed it. Overall the apprenticeship helped me build a strong set of practical skills that I can use in my career going forward.

Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I felt the programme was well organised and structured. There was a good balance between the time spent learning and the practical work in the workshop, which helped reinforce what I was being taught. The expectations were clear and I always knew what I was working towards. Support was available when needed and the programme progressed at a good pace, allowing me to develop my skills and knowledge throughout the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I received a good level of support from my employer throughout the apprenticeship. The technicians and managers in the workshop were always willing to help if I had questions or needed guidance. They took the time to explain things properly and made sure I had opportunities to learn and get hands-on experience. I always felt supported and encouraged to develop my skills and confidence while working as part of the team.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I received good support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They were helpful with explaining the coursework and making sure I understood what was required. If I needed help or had questions, they were available and willing to support me. The regular contact and guidance helped me stay on track and complete the qualification alongside my work in the workshop.

I feel that the qualification from my training provider helped me perform better in my role. The knowledge I gained supported the practical work I was doing in the workshop and helped me understand why certain tasks are done in specific ways.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There aren’t many formal extra-curricular activities, but the workplace has a good team atmosphere and everyone gets along well. The team is friendly and supportive, which makes it an enjoyable place to work and learn. Even without organised activities, there is a strong sense of teamwork in the workshop.
