Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I support people who have a range of learning disabilities to live their life to the full. I help them to do tasks that they would be unable to do for themselves, such as their own personal care, managing their medication and money, cleaning and cooking and helping to access the community to attend medical appointments and day to day activities.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed the course very much and I had good support from my manager and work colleagues and also the team at Paragon skills. I have gained knowledge and skills and this has boosted my confidence, which I know that I lacked prior to doing the course.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have used my organisation and time management skills to enable me to complete all my work on time and complete all my training. I have also learnt how to use the Nourish system as this was implemented whilst I was studying.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I think that the course was well structured as there were many parts to each module. You firstly have an elearning lesson to complete, after this you then have a workshop where you discuss the topic and this enables everyone to share their views and ideas. Then you have your assignments questions to complete and researched into.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I received a good level of support from my manager, I knew that if I was confused over a topic, I could ask them to explain the issue. I also had opportunities to do different times which enabled me to complete all my off the job training.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I had regular review meetings with my tutors during the course, this enabled me to questions on areas where I was struggling or seek clarification on which module to put my off the job hours done onto. I also was able to email and message my tutors who got back to me in good time, if an issue had arisen.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that I mostly gained confidence from completing the course and this has helped me to know that I am doing my job well and completing tasks to a good standard.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have had a range of special activities at work, such as having therapy donkeys come into work to meet the staff and people we support, we have also had coffee mornings where their families have come into the service. I had the pleasure of going to my companies award ceremony last year where we came runner up in the care home of the year category.
