Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role as a Procurement Category Lead in the private healthcare organisation is responsible for developing and delivering category strategies that ensure high quality, cost effective products and services across clinical and non clinical areas. The role involves managing key supplier relationships, driving commercial value, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, and supporting resident focused service delivery. Working closely with clinical teams, hospitality, operations, and finance, the Category Lead analyses spend, identifies opportunities to optimise the supply chain, oversees tendering and contract negotiations, and ensures continuity of supply for critical healthcare goods and services.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I’ve worked in procurement for over 20 years, gaining extensive experience across a wide range of categories, suppliers, and commercial environments. My career has been built largely on hands on learning and practical experience rather than formal qualifications, so starting the CIPS Level 4 Apprenticeship has been a genuinely enjoyable and rewarding step for me. I really value the combination of on-the-job learning with structured study. It allows me to immediately apply what I am learning in the tutorials to real procurement situations.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Since beginning the CIPS Level 4 programme, I have gained a much deeper understanding of core procurement principles and how they apply in a strategic context. Key areas of learning include; Commercial and Procurement Fundamentals, Category Management, Supplier Management and commercial contracting and additionally the wider conversation on Ethical and responsible sourcing. My favourite module has been expanding on my current knowledge through ESG strategies and Ethical practices.
Skills I have developed; strategic thinking, analytical skills, negotiation and communication and a greater understanding of wider supply chains.
For my personal reflection the programme has allowed me to formalise and strengthen my knowledge. I’m really enjoying learning the theory behind the practices I’ve applied throughout my career; it’s helping me grow my confidence and capability as a procurement professional

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The CIPS Level 4 programme is well structured and has provided a clear, logical learning path that builds steadily from core procurement principles. Each module is organised in a way its easy to understand each topic and each learning outcome.
I particularly appreciate the balance between theory, practical examples and workplace application. Content is broken down into manageable sections. Overall the programme feels clear and designed to help learners build confidence as they move through each stage.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Balancing a demanding workload alongside studying CIPS Level 4 and managing two young children (under the age of 10 years) can be challenging at times. However, my employer is understanding and supportive which makes a significant different. The flexibility has encouraged me to work at a pace which is best suited for me and to work through the programme methodically by each module.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Aspire Training provider have been amazing! My mentor has been extremely supportive especially when at times its been most challenging. Aspire always offer encouragement and a genuine commitment for me to succeed. They offer lots of additional training material to revise for study.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Although I experienced a number of setbacks when I failed one of my CIPS exams, I never allowed it to discourage me or affect my long term goals. Instead, it motivated me to work even harder. With continued support, guidance, and encouragement from my mentor, employer, and training provider, I remained determined and focused That determination has since paid off, as I have since gone on to pass my exams and progress confidently through the programme. This experience has strengthened my resilience, improved my study approach, and reminded me of the importance of perseverance. What felt like a challenge at the time has ultimately helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I do often attend tradeshow events with suppliers which is great for networking and looking at new products to market. Market insight is a great way to identify new trends and understanding supplier innovation.
