Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Intern within EY Private- the private client team in audit. I worked on the statutory audit for a large privately-owned company.
I was involved in carrying out audit procedures, such as testing financial statement account balances, and completing documentation.
I also shadowed colleagues and attended many client meetings.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, as the work I completed was work that needed being done for the audit. Nothing I did for the sake of it- it was all essential audit work.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Lots of support. I was placed on a specific team throughout the whole internship, who were very approachable and always were happy to answer questions. I was treated as any other member of the team and my contributions were valued.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Excellent company culture. The culture was very collaborative. My team (and I believe many others) had daily catch-up meetings.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Very much. It's especially good for people interested in accounting, as everyone is so knowledgeable about accounting, which means that there are opportunities to have discussions and ask questions. For those who don't know much about accounting it's also a great place to learn.

Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
Don't just apply because you want a good name on your CV. Do it because you want to learn about audit (or tax etc) as a career. Those who do the internship because it was a backup and they wanted something else did not get much out of it. To make the most of it you truly have to want to be there.
Set aside lots of time to do the job simulation in the application process. It will really pay off.
