Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Mace?
I love my job at Mace. I am pleasantly surprised that a large global corporate organisation can be so comfortable and welcoming. Mace is the type of organisation where you can be sat in-between an Apprentice and a Regional Director on a casual Tuesday, which demonstrates how open and collaborative of an environment it is. This kind of proximity is rare and speaks volumes about the culture at Mace. It's a place where hierarchy doesn't create barriers, and hard work and curiosity is rewarded with opportunities to broaden one's experience. Through my time at Mace I have worked on such varying projects and multi-disciplinary teams and no day is the same.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
My favourite part of my actual day-to-day role is the measurement process. I truly enjoy the process of measuring the architect's drawings on our measuring and costing software - CostX, it's quite therapeutic! As my role is client facing, I really enjoy and appreciate when I have become proficient in something enough to be able to personally present/ communicate with the client and taking a leadership in certain areas, to the point where I am the point of contact for the client, as it builds and strengthens my confidence in my role.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
My role definitely gives me the opportunity to contribute meaningfully as cost is a very important factor of a construction project, if not the most important! But I think most of that is relative to my organisation. My organisation consists of cost teams who are supportive and patient and willing to share knowledge and experiences, which allow me to then contribute meaningfully and feel like a valued member of the team.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
We have a pension scheme. a health insurance scheme, opportunities to receive discount from major retailers which is all really important and which I am grateful for. I believe that to improve, Mace should make it easier for employees to access home working furniture (e.g. monitors/ office chairs, etc) as this is something that is not provided. Considering it is a hybrid role, I think it's important that these resources are made readily available to employees for the sake of their health, posture, etc.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
The role is definitely preparing me well for my future career. I have developed my knowledge and expertise hugely in the last 12 months which I'm really proud of.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
3/5
I am definitely learning through training and developing new skills through the work I do, which demonstrates how much I have developed in the last 12 months and what I am now capable of. However, I think there could be more support for the RICS APC Process in terms of guidance for resources to access, etc.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
All of the staff at Mace are super supportive. Everyone has time for you and are prepared to help you when you need it. Work related or not, my colleagues have been there for me to support me.
How is your work-life balance?
3/5
My role is quite demanding due to tight deadlines and heavy responsibility, which means a lot of the time I will find myself working late, however, this is something I don't mind doing on occasion in order to complete actions and push out deliverables. There are times when I find work can be a little quiet and some times when I may be working exceptionally late in the evening, it's all part of the parcel!
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Mace take their culture and values very seriously, and so all of the employees embody this culture too. Mace has their own values and behaviours which makes up their "culture." And this feeds into the daily attitudes of all employees and the way we communicate, support one another and the quality of the work we do.
How would you rate Mace initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
Mace is a very diverse organisation. All employees are treated equally and provided with equal opportunities. Additionally, Mace raise awareness of the different beliefs and backgrounds within the organisation. Particularly, there was recently one event that was organised in my local office which invited employees to attend the office wearing their traditional clothing and were invited to bring traditional snacks, etc with them to share traditions and raise awareness about one another's beliefs which makes us all feel seen and appreciated and encourages you to feel comfortable to bring your whole self to work, which is something Mace prides themselves on.
How would you rate Mace CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
At Mace, it is compulsory to complete at least 1 volunteering activity a year, which reminds us to support and give back to local communities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I feel that the graduate scheme was a perfect way to transition from full time education to full time work and have all the required support to excel and develop my skills and expertise. The people at Mace pride themselves of being collaborative, being curious and championing one another and it creates a warm and welcoming environment.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
Very well. The graduate scheme is a very structural process and aligns well with what was outlined through the recruitment process. Graduates and Apprentices are managed by their own HR called Emerging Talent, which supports our growth and structure of our career on a closer level.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Mace?
I would say to research the company initially and understand it's projects and processes. I would also say to read further into Mace's Values and Behaviours as this is what Mace prides themselves off of and what creates such an inviting environment and culture, so being able to learn and demonstrate/ align with them shows that you fit the company well.
