Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
At Paragraf I had two main roles. Firstly I was to support the technician team in testing and manufacturing stock and experimental devices and secondly I was performing research using the aforementioned devices. This often required research reading and a lot of time in the lab making up reagents.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was in charge of my own research budget and direction of research. I had to present findings weekly.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learnt to use countless pieces of characterisation equipment and learnt a lot about science in the chemistry/biology interface. My professional skills also benefitted endlessly due to report writing and working between an office and lab environment.

Lots, my line manager was always available for help whenever necessary and was always happy to provide advice which helped me infinitely.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The general atmosphere was always very friendly. Anyone in the building would talk to you given they had time and everyone was wanting to help however they could. I felt incredibly valued as a person in Paragraf, like I was a person not just a means to an end.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I found my placement challenging at time trying to work full time and study was definitely something I was not ready for but Paragraf supported me. I really enjoyed working there and I will never forget the links I have made with people there |I would highly recommend it.

What advice would you give to others applying to Paragraf
Emphasise your hunger to learn, graphene is a material which is so heavily researched yet we still don't understand it fully yet hence there is always more to know and people at Paragraf want to know that you can pick that up as and when new information is released. Focus on your ability to apply and understand what you know about the area with what related topics you already have in your arsenal.
