Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I would help the analysts and associates by reading brokers reports, filling out excel sheets and models, helping to create pitchbooks and doing precedent transactions. This varied heavily based on the project that I was assigned to. UBS also held various speaker sessions with different divisions in Investment Banking (both product and sector groups), sessions where we as interns got to interview senior members of the bank (e.g. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and more general sessions with all interns across the bank where we would listen to senior speakers from the bank [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and senior clients
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes - although your work does get checked by seniors, very early on (in the first few weeks) you are given responsibility on the internship, and by the end of the internship I was interacting with Executive Directors and Managing Directors directly. The tasks given were meaningful and were often sent directly to clients after checks. I felt that I was exposed to the business through all the different verticals and was able to join on a lot of different projects.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have definitely learnt a lot more about modelling and the financial aspect of the job, which I have developed by working on the job and asking questions. Coming into the internship, my knowledge was limited and has definitely developed throughout my 10 weeks. By giving the interview with the senior member of the bank, I have also developed my public speaking and communication skills which are vital to the job. Another key skill learnt was certainly time management and organizational skills when working multiple projects at the same time and learning how to prioritize between them.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was given a lot of support on the internship with an assigned line manager and buddy, but I found that I was able to ask questions to everyone in the group regardless of their seniority due to the friendliness of the team. Though it was not necessary, I knew the HR contact points and knew that I could contact the staffer if I had any further issues in regards to my workload. The general attitude was very encouraging and somewhere I would want to work in long term.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was very friendly, as I said when describing my team everyone is very approachable. Even when I went on coffee chats with people outside of my team to find out more about different areas in Investment Banking, I found that everyone was very welcoming and willing to answer all of my questions regardless of how silly it might be. We had social events regularly in the team and HR held multiple larger events (Summer Party and Speaker Series) where we were able to learn more about the culture.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed my internship because I found that everyday was a different day with different activities and projects to work on. The team was very welcoming and the company culture was much more friendly than I expected. I also had an impression that the hours would be very long, but have found that they have been much better than expected other than the occasional late night. I think I would want to go back because of my time on the 10 week internship.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to UBS
I applied via the Spring Week in my first year so I was able to skip some of the initial screening tests (numerical and verbal tests). For interviews and AC I would prepare beforehand for the behavioural questions and for the technical questions make sure that I have good idea about the market and deals going on. For day one, I would not worry as much of it is to learn on the job, and this is something that I wish I had known as going into the internship I thought that I was in a weak position not knowing a lot of the modelling and valuation side.
