Internal Audit Intern Review

During my summer placement with Valero’s Internal Audit team in London, I was responsible for SOX overtesting across both the Pembroke refinery and London office operations. My day-to-day work involved sampling, collecting and validating documentation, and preparing workpapers to assess the design and operating effectiveness of key financial and operational controls. I also supported the Port Security Audit and gained experience using AuditBoard and SAP to complete testing, documentation, and reporting.

Yes - I was trusted to manage several SOX control areas independently, from documentation collection through to testing and reporting. I was responsible for maintaining accurate workpapers and liaising with staff across departments to obtain audit evidence. The team encouraged initiative and accountability, which helped me develop both technically and professionally.

During my internship, I developed a strong understanding of internal audit methodologies and SOX compliance testing. I became proficient in using AuditBoard and SAP, as well as improving my skills in Excel, data analysis, and documentation management. I also enhanced my attention to detail, communication, and professional judgement through evidence gathering, control testing, and discussions with staff across departments. Overall, the placement strengthened both my technical audit skills and my confidence in a corporate environment.

I received excellent support and guidance throughout my placement. The Internal Audit team, particularly my senior auditors and the Director of International Audit, were always approachable and willing to provide feedback and clarification when needed. Regular check-ins ensured I understood each task, while I was also encouraged to work independently and take ownership of my assignments. The HR team was also very supportive, organising events and ensuring interns were well integrated into the company.

The company culture at Valero was very professional yet welcoming. Everyone was approachable, supportive, and willing to help, which created a positive and collaborative working environment. The Internal Audit team encouraged open communication and continuous learning, while other departments were equally friendly and happy to share their knowledge. The HR team also played a big role in fostering this atmosphere by organising social events and networking opportunities, helping interns feel included and part of the wider Valero community.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Valero and found it to be an incredibly rewarding experience. The placement offered the perfect balance between structured guidance and independent responsibility, allowing me to apply my academic knowledge to real-world scenarios. The work was varied and engaging, and I felt that my contributions were genuinely valued by the team. Beyond the technical learning, I also appreciated the friendly and supportive culture, as well as the social events organised by HR that made the experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend the internship to anyone interested in audit within the energy sector.
