Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Galliford Try?
Very supportive team and environment. It is well structured so you know who to go to for different problems. The senior staff are patient when it comes to on the job training. The office is very modern and in a nice location.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Produce various electrical deliverables for projects in the water sector. These include Single Line Diagrams, Block Cable Diagrams, Terminations, Network Architecture drawings, Lightning Risk Assessments, Instrument schedules, Load schedules, Cable schedules, Control Philosophies, User Requirement Specifications, just to name a few. We make sure the sites have enough power and route the necessary cables accordingly to allow for the process of clean water to work as designed. I really enjoy using CAD to produce drawings. I also review Pro-construction information to identify any information we need for our designs.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
There is a lot of opportunity to contribute meaningfully as the majority of deliverables we produce are sent to our clients. However, repeating the same deliverable when you become an expert can be monotonous.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
I have a company car which I make a lot of use of. I currently average 15000 miles/year. Salary could be better but it could always be better. Private medical insurance is good and GT match pension up to 4%. There is a scheme to purchase shares at a 20% discount but takes 3 years to mature.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I am gradually taking on more and more responsibility and getting work that I have not done before. I am learning a lot and gaining the knowledge required to be promoted.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
There is a lot to gain for producing deliverables for various projects. The projects vary quite a lot so there is a lot of variance in what solutions different sites require. This gives good opportunity to expand knowledge breadth.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
Line Managers and Mentors are great as they always make time and answer my questions or find the right person to answer the questions. The buddy system still has a long way to go as a lot of buddies do not take ownership of their responsibilities. HR is very much a mixed bag, sometimes they can be extremely useful and quick. Other times they will answer like a politician.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
There is no expectation to work extra hours. There is flexibility in what hours you choose to work.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
4/5
It is very positive, everyone is extremely welcoming. The majority of people do hybrid working and come into the office 2/3 days a week. There is still some work to do with inclusivity as not all our offices have a well being room to pray or do anything else in them.
How would you rate Galliford Try initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
3/5
Nothing in particular stand out. Not all offices are wheelchair accessible.
How would you rate Galliford Try CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
There is a great volunteering culture for improving local communities and fundraising for charities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Galliford Try to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is overall a really great place to work because the people are amazing and the work is interesting.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
3/5
No idea what I'd be doing when I applied for the job.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Galliford Try?
Take everything as it comes. Everywhere has issues with on boarding but GT have gone out of their way to try and improve it.
