Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day to day I would help out with anything that the team needed, therefore my role very much varied. Throughout the internship we had a task to last over the full 5 weeks with a presentation at the end, but we would pick up any tasks that needed doing on that day, and listened to calls, as well as completed lots of learnings such as leadership skills, and building our own personal brand. We would also spend time meeting interesting members of EY.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given lots of responsibility during my internship. At first, we did a lot of learning in order to know what we were doing to have responsibility. However, by the end of the internship, I was working on a real project and doing work on documents that were being directly sent to the client, so in my opinion I was given a lot of responsibility. I was also responsible to get the most out of my internship as I could, as the more I asked to do, the more I was able to do.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Definitely. I have learnt lots of new skills, especially personal soft skills such as networking, and learning the importance of putting yourself out there, speaking up in meetings and asking questions, as well as leadership and teamwork skills from our learnings. On top of this, I developed my presentation skills, as well as my skills on Excel and Powerpoint, and learned how to use software specific to Corporate Finance, such as CapIQ, Power BI and Mergermarket.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was given a lot of support and guidance during my internship. We were assigned a buddy who supported us from before the start of our internship, giving me a call to discuss any questions I may have. We were also assigned a counsellor who was responsible for our welfare during the internship, so if we had any issues we could go to her. Also, everyone at EY would answer any question that we had and give us support.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is great. Everyone is so welcoming and EY is trying very hard to make sure the workforce is diverse. We took part in 2 charity CSR days, one for the environment, and one for vulnerable young people, because it is in the company values to give back to the community. There are also lots of social events to network and meet people, as well as get to know your team much better.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I loved my internship. I am so grateful for the amazing opportunities I had while I was at EY, and the work I was able to contribute to that could actually mean the start of a new project. Everyone was so welcoming and the work was extremely interesting, meaning that it was a really great atmosphere to work in. I would love to go back and work at EY in a graduate position because I loved the internship.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
I would advise other applying to EY to make sure you have done your research and not to be frightened to apply because it is such a welcoming atmosphere. When preparing for day one, it is important to remember that nobody minds how much sector knowledge you have, only that you be yourself and are polite and friendly. This is the advice I would give myself if I was going to go back and reapply to EY.
