Industrial Placement Review

I was a Student Intern - mostly shadowed and assisted the on-site engineer. Eventually I was allowed to perform tasks on-site by myself including taking measurements, surveying, setting out and taking observations. I was also tasked with forms of officework - sorting and uploading permits, reorganising documents - and calculations for concrete cubing.

I was given plenty responsibility for tasks that initially required supervision until I could perform them accurately on my own. Activities that impacted the ongoing works of the site minimally, such as setting out, surveying and cubing were given to me after completing them multiple times under supervision. These were then checked by my supervisor upon completion.

I managed to develop my existing surveying skills, organisational skills and time management skills as i met my deadlines when assigned tasks.
I also became aware of the number of people required and the different levels of communication required to complete a task on site.

I received a lot of support during my internship from my line managers and superiors as well as from the workers on site. Everybody was kind enough to answer any questions I had about the ongoing works and explain anything I could not understand.

The culture and atmosphere of the office was very friendly and considerate - people often shared food, answered any questions I had and were happy to share their own experiences of working on-site for the many years they had been working prior to my joining.

My placement was very enjoyable, I managed to learn a lot and quickly was able to grasp the general situation of the site (e.g: ongoing works and layout). Through this internship, I was able to develop a number of my soft skills and technical skills whilst also learning about what work in the industry is like.
There were a few technical issues that initially delayed the effectiveness of my experience during the placement - such as a laptop/software not being available for when I started (which I required to book my transport and accommodation) but technical issues were expected for the start of my placement. Other than this however, the company itself is very accommodating and easy to work with.
