Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I was working on the CSLR Project so my role consisted off working with the structures department for 4 weeks and then the roadworks department for 4 weeks. I visited site multiple times a day to record and oversee operations on site. In the office I was drawing and calculating temporary works and looking over drawings.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given some responsibility, but due to me only completing one year of University at the time I was limited to what I could understand. It was good for my first placement however.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I learnt how to use a total station and GPS to survey and mark out sites. I also learned how to log work being done and then to communicate it with the rest of the team.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

A lot. The engineers I was working with were very helpful and explained everything in detail. The HR team were also good as they sorted out my PPE and answered any questions I had.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Very welcoming and polite. There was a good work atmosphere but also a good work ethic at the same time.

Enjoyed it a lot at it was great to see how real life Civil Engineering is compared to what University makes it out to be.
