Industrial Placement Student Review

My role included experience within the PSA team at BDO London - I was exposed to audit work from a beginner level to an intermediate level through the year. I gained valuable insights on audit framework, and majority of my work included gaining skills on software such as APT and Excel.

I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement which was encouraging - initially you are expected to ask a lot of questions to help bridge knowledge gaps however managers feel comfortable in giving you tasks and allow you to build confidence in yourself. This was a big takeaway from my placement year as I felt like I was a valuable part of the team.

I have learnt new skills in audit documentation, in the use of software such as Excel and APT, and developed skills in communication and teamwork given exposure in a team environment.

I received a lot of guidance throughout the year which was really appreciated. All members of the team were more than happy to help with any questions I had from start to finish and I never felt like a hindrance.

The company culture is made aware to us from day one; it is very much a people's firm and very inclusive. My team was made up of individuals from a wide range of background and we always respected each other's beliefs and opinions.

I enjoyed the placement a lot and this year out of university has given me a clear insight on how I want to proceed with my career post university - this was something I didn't have much clue about prior to my placement year.
