Financial Services Audit Trainee Review

In my role at BDO, I assisted with audits for Banking & Alternative Finance Companies. Each day, I focused on documenting the organisation's processes and controls during the audit's planning stage. This helps us understand how the company operates and identify any areas that need attention.
I also played a key part in testing, ensuring the figures reported by the company are accurate and free from fraudulent activity. This involves a detailed examination of financial statements and transactions, providing assurance that everything is in order.
By combining thorough documentation with rigorous testing, I helped deliver audits that are both insightful and reliable, supporting the integrity of financial reporting in the sector.

During my placement, I was entrusted with a significant amount of responsibility, which was both challenging and rewarding. I was given my own tasks to complete within the audit process, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to the team. I was treated like a regular member of staff, which meant I had the opportunity to work independently and make decisions that impacted the project. This level of responsibility enhanced my understanding of the audit process.

- Professional Communication - Communicating with colleagues and clients.

During your placement, you'll have a buddy who's been with BDO for a year. They're there to help you settle in and answer any minor questions you might not want to take to your manager. You'll also have a People Manager, who acts as your line manager. In Audit, you'll be booked onto various audits, so your line manager may change. That's why the People Manager is there for consistent support. Plus, you'll have backing from your team on each audit you work on.

BDO has a fantastic company culture. Partners and senior management don't have separate offices—they sit alongside you, making them approachable and fostering a collaborative environment. This setup reflects BDO's culture, where everyone is treated with respect and teamwork is at the heart of what they do.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at BDO. It offered me a valuable insight into the Audit sector, which was new to me before joining. I appreciated the responsibility I was given, allowing me to make the most of my time and gain a comprehensive understanding. However, I did find the long hours and overtime demanding, which sometimes made the role more tiring.
