Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I researched tax laws and any updates to the legislation. I was also sometimes given a list of potential clients and did background research on them. Furthermore, I helped with writing letters to clients and preparing technical reports. I also created presentations and leaflets.
In addition, I had plenty of opportunities to attend client meetings. I reached out to another service line as well to get more exposure.
I also took part in mandatory learning.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I had new and interesting work to do every day. The workload was varied. When there wasn't much to do, I could fill my time with mandatory learning or work towards one of the EY Badges (optional learning on a variety of topics).
I wasn't micromanaged and was left to do the work at my own pace. However, this does not mean that I didn't get support, the team was very friendly and I could approach them with a question anytime.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
By attending client meetings, I have learnt how to talk to people in a business setting. I also developed my technical writing and research skills.
There are a lot of opportunities to learn new things. For example, EY Badges is a great programme which has online courses on various different topics. You can do these at your own pace to develop your knowledge in a subject area of your choice.
You also get to hear from external speakers.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The balance between support and giving you space was just right. If I was doing something new, my buddy (a person less senior than manager which is assigned as your first point of contact) would explain it to me and also show me examples of previous related work.
Other than that, I wasn't constantly disturbed and could do the work at my own pace. I could approach my buddy with questions at any time.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
EY has a very people oriented culture. Even as an intern, I felt valued and respected. When I started, I expected the senior members to just ignore my emails but they always responded in a timely manner. Everyone was very inclusive and always asked me to introduce myself in meetings.
The hybrid working system is really great as I could choose when to come into the office and could work from home if I wanted to.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my internship and would highly recommend it. The length of five weeks is just right so you get to lean about the business without it becoming boring or repetitive.
What really worked for me was reaching out to other service lines when I was low on work so I got to experiencing different parts of the company.
EY heavily invested in my development by Providence lots of learning opportunities, which included external speakers.

Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
Do not be put off by thinking that it is a big company and therefore, the application process or the work will be difficult. Whilst the application process is rather long, it is a great learning experience and even if you're unsuccessful, at least you have more practice.
Definitely give it a go regardless of what you study at university. There are interns from all sorts of backgrounds and experiencing levels. By doing this internship, I discovered a new career option!
