Summer intern Review

Worked as an intern in the Valuations department within Strategy and Transactions service line. Got the opportunity to rotate around the department and its sub-divisions and work with different members of the team on their projects and tasks. My work included researching specific companies and their industries, screening for comparable companies, performing valuation approaches, forecasting data and presenting to the team. Got to interact with colleagues at a range of different levels, from analysts to partners, and got a good insight into the different projects and industries the team has done work for.

Managed to get involved in a range of different projects from different industries, however since we only worked with each team member for a short period of time tasks given were only small, however they were still very interesting and useful. Was still given a good amount of responsibility in conducting screening and preparing overviews for reports, however the team members were always available for a chat if anything needed clarification or I needed help on something specific.

Definitely managed to improve my knowledge of financial terminology and concepts by being able to access web-based learning modules and then understanding how these are applied in the work that the team does. Also improved my research skills, utilising the range of data sources available as well as improving my Excel skills through looking at analysing and forecasting financial data. I also got to complete EY badges which were available on different topics, in particular I enjoyed the module on Blockchain and Data Integration.

I received a lot of support and guidance throughout the internship. We were each given a counsellor who we had fortnightly meetings with to go through our progress and what we had been doing, as well as get feedback from the people we'd been working with. The members of the team were always approachable and I found that I could ask many of the people around me if I needed help or wanted to know more about something i'd come across.

Overall a really collaborative and friendly culture within the department I was working with. Members often invited us out for socials, be it drinks after work, lunches or even partner breakfasts - there seemed to be a really good sense of togetherness and welcoming atmosphere which I really enjoyed and am grateful for. Colleagues were always willing to talk to us either informally or about their work, and were always happy to give insights into projects they were working on or things they'd done in the past.

I thoroughly enjoyed the internship due to both the work and team. I found the work and tasks I was given very interesting and also useful in improving my working knowledge of the industry and applying concepts I'd learnt about. The whole team was really approachable and friendly and I felt very comfortable asking questions even if they sounded silly. I was initially worried that working at such a big company would mean that there was little time for interns and the colleagues would be too busy, but this was not the case as they always found time to help us and get to know us better.
