Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was part of the Corporate Tax team (formally Global Compliance and Reporting). During my internship I shadowed meetings, both internally and with clients, and assisted with many tasks such as inputting information into a tax-specific software or into Excel, often looking at accounts on Companies House to collect information about a company or group (and its subsidiaries)
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
The responsibility varied - I knew it was important for me to get things right first time, such as information being inputted into an Excel document. However, I knew that the work would get reviewed before being 'officially' used, which reduced pressure and knew it wasn't the end of the world if I got it wrong. It was good to know that I was helping someone, and getting it right would be great, but it felt good to not have all the responsibility lay on myself, especially as someone who had little financial and accounting history or knowledge

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I've learnt many skills - the biggest personally has been beginning to understand companies' accounts! I developed my use of excel skills and general technical skills. Alongside this I have learnt and developed many other 'soft skills' such as networking, asking for work, asking for help, and how to interact with different types of clients.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Lots! Everyone from the lowest to highest grades were happy to give up their time to explain elements to you or answer any and all questions you had. Most tasks I was given began with a call or meeting with them describing the task to you, providing an example, and then asking if you had any questions. Throughout any task I knew I could ask any question I had and it wouldn't be perceived as 'silly'. We were given a 'buddy' who was in their first year at EY, who was a nice, informal contact for support and guidance throughout the internship, for example questions I had about software we were using, proof reading emails, how to do expenses/timesheets. The support from the whole team was great and made for an enjoyable and stress-less experience

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Great! We luckily had a few social events during the internship. We had a team social and an office social in the second week which was great to meet everyone, particularly in person, in an informal and relaxed setting. Everyone from the lowest to the highest level was happy to help and were down to earth, making for a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. The 'vibe' I got from general work in my service line is that there are some busy periods, but they are not as intense as other service lines and EY is great for flexible working. Many people within the team work only a few days a week for childcare, which is a great sign for me in future, as I know this company will support my wishes and will work around them. Everyone was supportive and seemed happy, which gave the atmosphere of a great company culture

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed my internship a great deal and I'm sad to be leaving. The team culture is great, inclusive, and welcoming. I do love working with numbers and excel, which I haven't had done much of during my degree so it has been a great and new experience. I applied to the internship to get a new experience and I'm certain this has led to a new career for me.

Be yourself and have fun! The application process can feel long and feel uncertain, but just put yourself out there and be confident. The best thing is to show yourself, your ambition, and work ethic - as those are the most important things
