Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
You get a buddy and a councilor who are your first points of contacts. You will likely join their teams (but it is your choice ultimately). During the summer there is less emphasis on reserving due to the time of year, instead there is a lot of creating PowerPoint slides for client workshops. These explain various subject matter concerning: ways to adapt current modelling processes inline with the economic situation of the country/world, how to adhere to certain legislation. Some modelling projects are also available to join. Once you are in a team you join various client and internal meetings daily.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes I was given multiple responsibilities. One task was a research related one where i had to cycle through many sources regarding ways to improve some policies based on the current economic climate. This required me to format the findings clearly for the leader so it could easily be converted into a slide deck. I also helped with making slides on various projects, some of the helping was just formatting, however other times it was creating the actual slides by looking at different documents. There were also many other responsibilities such as conducting capital tests (on excel) and reserving (excel and internal software).

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed my PowerPoint and Excel skills to be aligned with company expectations and branding. Excel skills include learning various new formula such as sumifs. Furthermore, I have also developed my communication skills when talking to the team in person and online. I have also practiced using an internal reserving modelling software and how to conduct some capital tests. In addition to this, my time management skills have improved as i juggled multiple projects.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
There was so much support throughout the internship. You are given a buddy (a new graduate at EY) who is your first point of contact and a councilor (a manager at EY). They are constantly checking in on you and allow you to join their projects. Furthermore other members of the teams you join are always helping and you are welcomed to ask questions to. There were also other people who were responsible in ensuring you had enough work and had constant check ins with you too. Support and guidance was never an issue.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is very welcoming. Everyone is always asking if you have any questions and there are lots of social events and opportunities to meet the team. There are bi-weekly meetings with the whole department as well so they are constantly ensuring everyone is happy.
A new floor was being trialed at the canary wharf office during my internship. This space had many real house plants, football table, boards games and more. The canteen was very nice too.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I very much so enjoyed the internship. It is difficult to understand what a job, particular actuary, is like from just reading information. Being able to delve right into projects and see the actuaries at work allowed me to fully understand what it is like. There were many social events within the department and great events organized by the summer internship team. Everything ran very smoothly and a thoroughly enjoyed and gained much insight from this 5 week experience.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
Try and perform your best in all the tests, do not stress too much as they are similar to other application processes. Try to apply to the spring insight as you can skip a few of the application stages and gain a summer internship for the following year. The spring insight also gives an opportunity to speak to graduates and understand what the work is like. Don't be afraid to speak up during assessment centers and try and be confident during the other stages.
