Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The day begins with meetings and there is work filtered through to you throughout the day - which makes you feel like a lawyer already, as it allows you to acclimatise to what kind of commitment and workload a lawyer has to take on.
I've been able to build on my professional skills - the way I carry myself, confidence during starting conversations and introducing myself and even developing my reading skills as a level of attention when proofreading and active listening skills during client calls - which is amazing exposure for someone who has never even worked in an office before!
The day is quite flexible in terms of what work is given to you and is based on what you're comfortable with and abilities. The expectation is that you immerse yourself into the firm culture and remain enthusiastic even during the more quieter periods.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given some responsibility during my work experience - seeing as I am a first year university student studying law, there was a limitation to what I could realistically do, which I knew going into the firm.
However, I was mistaken.
I sat in on some client calls, took notes for meetings, carried out legal research and analysis for live deals, built my network and then relied on that network to help me with my research. So, a lot of things I definitely didn't know before and it's only the third week!
I've also been able to get involved with the firm's social activities, and whilst they may not hold large responsibility, there is still an expectation to uphold professionalism - which is also something I did not know prior to going into the firm!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have definitely developed my active listening skills and my professional skills.
I started the work experience with so much anxiety around the fact that I didn't know what to expect of a corporate environment, and vice versa.
Everyone has been so nice and accommodating and it is lovely to see that Macfarlanes really does mean it when they say they have an open-door policy.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The support and guidance I have received from the firm has been inexplicable.
I mentioned earlier that I had some anxiety going into the firm because of a lack of legal work experience or experience in a corporate world. Macfarlanes has been supporting me from the first day and technically way before I even arrived at the firm by way of panels, talks and workshops!
As an applicant from a socially-mobile background, it was key for me to train at a firm where I felt accepted and valued - Macfarlanes has never once had any preconceptions about supporting me and my needs.
During the work, you get two mentors and two supervisors and you meet up with them regularly as well as regular catch-ups with the Early Legal Careers Team. So, you're never left wandering by yourself! The collaboration element of the firm is something I really enjoy and something I think sets them apart from other firms in the city.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture of the firm is something I wasn't expecting from a London city law firm.
I've spoken to partners and senior associates around the firm and not known (until I asked), that they were seniors! Everyone is down to earth and encourages everyone to be individually authentic.
There is a "partner-led approach" that Macfarlanes focuses heavily on and highlights their commitment to fostering a collaborative working environment, which is definitely showcased through the welcoming nature of everyone in the firm.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to my legal career and I feel positive about my career and where I am.
Being here has opened so many doors for me and I am very grateful for all of the support I have received and how accessible Macfarlanes has made my legal career.
