Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

We as a mentor work with pupils develop their academic skills and mental health which we have ten students each. Every week, we need to meeting with all student by taking them out of classes not main subjected. During the session, we will greet them, provide lesson for their ABCD which is Attendance, Behaviour, Curriculum and development of social and emotional learning by the materials from our organisation. We also work in a team so you would be able to practice you team work skills and your manager will also provided session for your skills development. Every Friday, you will have one day training of any particular skills that the organisation provided.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

What we have done is not only mentoring but also organizing events and clubs such as Christmas hamper donation, homework clubs, provided curriculum support, reading intervention for strengthen students reading age, in class support to help pupils to focus. Maintain a good relationship with staff and students. Moreover, having 10 students and constantly one to one mentor them will be a great amount of responsibility which haven’t include the training during Friday of our personal skills like active listening, leadership, public speaking, enterprising.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I have gain many support through CIty Year UK, especially from my manager who support my personal skills development and mentor teachings with students. We also have lots of team meeting, peer reviewing and cohort to help and support us. City year also cooperate with a mental health app called Pulum which will help you to check your mental health.
