Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Once up to speed, a HR Planning and Steering Intern can expect to have recurring administrative and reporting tasks, as well as general ad hoc tasks required to support the team.
There are also fantastic opportunities to be involved with large projects, something which is very fulfilling and challenging. Overall, a placement with BMW is what you make of it - an intern can work with their manager to secure involvement in any task of interest.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Of course, being an intern involves completing more so administrative and ancillary tasks, however, as stated previously, BMW interns are able to work with their support networks to secure involvement in important projects and meaningful tasks.
For example, my Manager was highly empowering and gave me the opportunity to secure a project lead role in a HR analytics project, within which I was given full responsibility for the project across the BMW UK Production Triangle.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
A HR Planning and Steering Intern can expect to learn a variety of skills. Most notably, they will develop data analytics competencies, communication skills, project management skills, team working skills, and presentation skills.
As mentioned, however, a placement with BMW is what you make of it, therefore interns can work with their managers to create personalised development plans. From this, an intern can gain exposure to projects and responsibilities that will enhance their targeted skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
BMW interns can expect to be assigned a mentor / buddy who will be their main source of support, however interns have the autonomy to seek support from anyone within their network - this depends entirely on their own initiative.
Of course, interns will also receive support from their wider team and line manager. If formal support is required for serious topics such as grievances, bullying, and harassment, interns can easily liaise with their Human Resource Manager.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
BMW's corporate values are responsibility, transparency, trust, and openness. Truly, these are at the core of our culture and, as such, an intern can expect a work dynamic in which they can openly voice their opinions, trust their colleagues, and take responsibility for their work.
Beyond this, there are a variety of diversity initiatives / projects that interns can support. From a social perspective, interns within BMW often organise fun activities outside of work hours.
