Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a Firefighter I contribute to public safety by responding to incidents, and by providing fire safety advice to local residents and businesses.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the programme very much - every incident presents a new challenge and opportunity for learning.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt many new skills relevant to my role as a Firefighter, and continued to develop skills I had learnt from my time in the Armed Forces.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The initial 15-week training is very well structured, and the further on-the-job learning and portfolio is fairly well set out. It can be difficult to complete the portfolio on station due to incidents or other responsibilities.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The London Fire Brigade provides a good deal of support for apprentices, with a dedicated welfare team and plenty of support from colleagues.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The portfolio work is completed fairly independently on station, however the Apprenticeship Coach is very helpful and able to answer any questions that may come up regarding the apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The initial training and further development on station provide great preparation for a career as a Firefighter, however I feel there is too much emphasis on the portfolio work and it can seem slightly irrelevant.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
The Brigade provides many different sports and pass times to get involved in, as well as doing social activities with your watch. The various Equality Support Groups also provide a great space for networking and professional development.
