Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a firefighter we are first responders to emergency calls, this could be to extinguish fires and save and protect life and property, or we could be attending road traffic collisions and marauding terrorist attacks or we could be assisting Ambulance services gain entry to a property to assist a patient. In between responding to incidents we also carryout community safety work such as, conducting home fire safety checks and fitting smoke alarms in the homes of the communities that we serve and fire safety checks at local businesses. Whilst present at station we participate in theoretical training sessions, practical training sessions and keeping our physical fitness up to par through gym sessions.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I greatly enjoy my work, our days are varied and there is often something new to challenge my skills and knowledge. I enjoy working with my colleagues and look forward to coming into work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt a plethora of new skills since having joined the brigade as well as developing a number of existing transferrable skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme I believe could benefit from some restructuring, the training school element could certainly benefit from consistency as the rotation of trainers tend to bring with them differing opinions as to how best to carryout skills.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
I have yet to ask for any specific support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
The offer of support is there, however I again have yet to require it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I believe the qualification helps us to carry out our role somewhat, however there are a number of differences between the way we are taught and what is done operationally. The knowledge we are taught to a degree is useful but again somethings are rarely if ever required once operational such as the tool weights etc. I feel that the training would be better if we were taught in the manner that we would actually do things in our role in the real world scenarios we will face.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend London Fire Brigade to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend the LFB to a friend and in fact have already with people I know currently going through the recruitment process. I believe the role of firefighter is one of the best vocations you can find.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to London Fire Brigade?
Research the role fully, understand what the job requires and whether it appeals to you on all levels, if it does fully immerse yourself and apply yourself 100 percent and the role is extremely rewarding and worthwhile.
