Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Programming, designing software solutions and collaborating with other members of my team to solve complex problems. 4 days a week at work and 1 day at unuiversity - followed by one university "sprint week" (5 days at uni) every semester. 5 days a week at work in between semesters.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme is designed to encourage collaboration with your team, regular check-ins and there's also a strong apprentice culture with lots of opportunities to network and get to know other apprentices on the course. Also, you're not really missing out on the university experience - there's a lot of opportunities to join societies and get involved around the campus.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Learnt a lot about software, coding and designing solutions in a short space of time. Also learnt/developed key soft skills which will be invaluable later on in my career.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is quite well-structured from a work perspective, especially the onboarding process. However there is room for improvement on the university side of things, especially to do with the module structure and the way the assignments are organised.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Now that the programme has been going on for a few years, apprentices are widely known about and you can receive help not just from our manager/team, but the general work culture allows for support from anyone - people are keen to help out apprentices when they can I have found.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
The introduction of a new university course has meant that our experience has differed a lot from previous cohorts. At times it can feel like there's not enough communication from the university and decisions regarding assignments are seemingly made on the fly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
Some modules are specific to workplace applications and help you to get a good understanding, but would benefit from being structured differently - this may improve over time though as the university receives more feedback. Other modules don't seem that useful and workplace applications of the content are limited.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
GS has a good apprentice social culture with a dedicated council to organise soical and networking events - as well as team socials. You also have the chance to network with apprentices from other companies through external events which are encouraged by the apprenticeship team. There's also a number of societies and sports events to get involved with at work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Goldman Sachs Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Strong apprentice culture, lots of support from the employer and the opportunity to build lifelong skills and networks at an early age, giving your career a massive headstart.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Goldman Sachs Group?
Make sure to research and come prepared to the interview with questions to ask - it shows that you've put in the effort to understand the firm. Time management skills are essential - it's not easy to balance work, uni and other commitments so make sure you're prepared for the workload.
