Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am now a site manager on an extremely large site of 470 home development. I oversee the daily workings of the site including managing staff, sub-contractors, monitoring timelines, ensuring health and safety is followed and so much more.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoyed my apprenticeship as it gave a great balance between theory and practice. I think the apprenticeship route offers much more to individuals as you finish with lots of experience and the qualification to back it up.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Over the course of my apprenticeship I learnt a lot of new skills. The biggest thing i've learnt is people management and time management as these are essential for site management. I've also learnt all the theory behind my role and put it into practice.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

It was well organised and it was clear what the expectations were from the start. It was also clearly set out what we'd be completing and when which helped me stay focused.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

When I started, I was able to work under 4 or 5 site managers and learnt so much from them all and was able to pick out the best practice from them all. Everyone at SJs is very supportive and you know who to go to if you need support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

On the days I was in college, they were very supportive and I knew I could speak to my tutor if I needed to.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My apprenticeship gave me the practical theory that I use and apply to my role every day. I particularly enjoyed this pathway as it allows you to apply all of the site learning in practice and I think this helped with my development. Also, it exposes you to the intricacies of a site so you understand the practical aspect behind the theory.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have charities of the year that we as a company host events and fundraisers for. Additionally, the company funds us places to run in local 10K runs and I have enjoyed these on a few occasions. Plus there are the seasonal functions too.

Why?
SJ Roberts are a brilliant organisation to work for and you can really feel that apprenticeships are at the core of everything they do. SJs try to develop as many people as possible and allow them the opportunity to grow and develop their skills even. more. There are so many apprenticeship routes that the company offers now so it gives many people the opportunity to get involved.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SJ Roberts Construction?
I think if you're clear from the beginning with what path you want to take and show them that you're hard working and dedicated, you'll be rewarded. If you're on the fence about an apprenticeship, I'd definitely recommend it, it's definitely worth it and SJ Roberts are a brilliant company to work for.
