Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Site Management – I work closely with the Site Manager on SJ Roberts Homes, which is where S J Roberts Construction is both Developer & Builder. This involves dealing with all staff, sub-contractors, H&S in order to ensure the build runs to schedule and the quality of the build is maintained.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have been on the HNC for Construction & the Built Environment which provided a broad introduction to site construction, but being on site and dealing with a live project is very beneficial and to feel one of the team. This made it enjoyable from the point of view of relevance, working within a team and nurturing working relationships.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt many new skills including dealing with all type of people, organisational, the importance of site safety, delivering toolbox talks, problem solving and working within a team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It was organised to an extent but allowed for flexibility and did not overwhelm me with too much to start with. It allowed me to complete tasks and gain confidence as I went along and when I was competent with each task I would move on to the next.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
A good amount of support both in the workplace and from Head Office, and I knew that if I had any questions I had only to ask. All were very patient, helpful and encouraging. I shadowed the H&S manager to give me the confidence for checking the safety of the site and the processes. I was confident that I could talk to my employer if I did not understand anything and that I would be helped but without being spoon-fed. I also was asked to be on local radio which helped with my communication skills and confidence, as well as my self-esteem.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider, at Shrewsbury Colleges, gave me lots of help and works very closely with the Employer.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It was a good course and an invaluable introduction to Site Management, and a happy marriage between the theory and the reality of working on a live project.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a number of social activities which mainly involve fundraising eg pie and pudding nights at a local pub, charity runs etc as well as Christmas functions.
