The spring insight provided a truly comprehensive breakdown of the different divisions within the bank. Despite the fact that so many different divisions were addressed in such a short time, the experience did not feel superficial. Instead, we had the chance to ask questions and reach a deeper understanding of what happens within each division. This is definitely a good insight for the undecided, whilst also adding value and a solid grounding for those who already know what to do.

I have developed my financial modelling and numerical skills during the global markets case studies, using several basic, but vital mathematical techniques in valuing a company for a theoretical buyout case study. I also developed key skills in critically evaluating investments for a strategic portfolio, such as balancing the client time horizons, in addition to weighing up the pros and cons of the investment such as risk, volitility etc. We also developed communication and interpersonal skills during networking.

During the spring insight, we learnt much about UBS's culture. It is clear that they value their juniors, giving many opportunities for constructive feedback and development opportunities. Likewise, despite the hierarchical structure present ubiquitous in investment banking, UBS almost 'flattens' this out, meaning that more senior employees are paired with those who have less experience, enabling one to develop themselves, whilst also making seniors more approachable. The atmosphere was positive and lively, and one felt comfortable to speak up. The culture is very inclusive and non-discriminatory, with all groups catered for.

I enjoyed the insight greatly. I found the case studies the most valuable, as they provided a true insight into what people do within UBS on a day to day basis. Moreover, the networking opportunities were thoroughly rewarding, and there were many opportunities to learn more by asking questions. We also had a virtual social which was well organised and enjoyable. Nevertheless, the online format does make it quite tiring at times, and it can be hard to maintain focus.
