Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Track engineers perform maintenance on track to ensure safety of trains and passengers. As an apprentice I am studying how my team mates work and how to complete jobs safely and efficiently
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I am fully enjoying the programme now I am working closer to home at my local depot. Previously I had been away from home at a training provider. The training itself was fine but living away from home and being presented with those sorts of challenges was difficult.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I am learning all the time at Network Rail especially now I am on track at nights and taking in the job every day.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I was made aware of how the whole programme should work before I started year 1. Since being back at Depot there has been a lack of communication through line manager with what they are expecting of me and also from my instructors concerning my coursework that I need to complete.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
In general I know there is someone I can talk to, I enjoy being on track with my team mates however I do feel there could be more communication from management
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider were good and I learned lots of knew skills from them. Unfortunately because we were there with other apprentices from other companies they did treat us all like we were all immature and some of the rules of the training centre are a bit childish
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It set me up for work in my actual company well and let me know the expectations of my company.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They do take care of you and offer you a decent wage for an apprenticeship. There is usually support given from somewhere.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
Expect to live away from home for a while during your apprenticeship however it is worth it once you are back at local depot
