Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I’m specialising in overhead lines. Day to day duties consist of patrols, heights and staggers, earthing, fixing faults, maintenance, training and college work.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I do really enjoy the programme, and there is so much emphasis on career progression, which is great! The only downside is, there can be a lot of waiting and sitting around.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes I’ve learnt a lot of new skills, including, working safely on the railway, wiring and testing, rigging wires, using tools and equipment. I’ve developed my mathematic skills also.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I haven’t had any major issues with organisation. All of my courses have ran smoothly and on time. Sometimes training courses have clashed with college courses, but easily solved.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
A lot of support. NWR really do want you to succeed and if you are proactive and communicate what you want. They will try to aid you in achieving your goals.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We have different tutors for different modules, so it depends who you have. Some are great, and really support you. However, there are others who aren’t as supportive.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification is vital in helping me perform better in my role. The emphasis on safety is amazing. Some of the modules aren't relevant to my role specifically. However, it helps with career progression and being able to transfer disciplines in the future.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes there are networking events. I get regular emails informing me about different events. I’m yet to find a sports team, however, I haven’t enquired about it.
