Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a trainee tax advisor sitting within the Capital allowances team at the London Bridge office. Much of my work consists of analysing fixed asset additions and marginal costs of a range of companies, to ascertain what capital allowances tax reliefs they can claim. These companies are wide ranging, from hotels to gyms to restaurants.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy much of my programme. Sometimes I can find the training and workshops a bit tedieous, but I especially enjoy client work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many skills, including significant excel improvements, speaking with clients, writing emails, and interacting with colleagues.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is moderately well structured. We have long periods (1+ months) at college, followed by client work in office. This is helpful as when we have exams, our sole focus is on these. We regularly have 2+ day stints of internal training, which can sometimes be difficult to manage alongside client work, but overall increases our knowledge.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive support in many ways from people in my team. My team is quite small, so I have built relationships with much of the team, and they all help out where I need assistance.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
This can vary based on the tutor, and the course. Sometimes we have long stints of 'self-study' where we go through the content ourselves, though I quite enjoy this. The in person classes are also beneficial - though when we have online classes these can sometimes be difficult to follow.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
It gives a wider base for my knowledge, though not much of my qualification has been directly applicable to my role as my area of tax is quite niche
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many to choose from, including a variety of sports, and even pizza making/cheese tasting!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
Why?
My work is enjoyable and I am progressing rapidly. The culture of the work place is great
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
Be open to things you may not expect, sometimes you can be placed in an unexpected team. I had reservations about being in capital allowances but I have very much enjoyed it, and there is always potential to move around teams if you wish
