Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Currently, I am studying at BMet in my first year. My role in the work place will be that of a skilled machinist who works within the machining area of BMW Plant Hams Hall. In college, I am in 5 days a week from 9 till 4 30, and the work I do is a series of courses. One course is dedicated to each day and it is incredibly interesting and engaging to learn and gain these skills.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my learning environment to a tremendous extent. Learning a wide variety of skills that are all designed to interest you as the student and constantly give you engaging challenges is incredibly wondrous and personally I find it amazing. The classes are not at all draining, and there is always something new to learn. Furthermore, these grant you life skills when it comes to basic handling - for example, I have taken my skills from my electrical course and used them within my home to fix up my light switches. Incredible.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt how to use a pillar drill, a milling machine, and use tools such as files, and an assortment of gauges. I have also learn quite a lot of health and safety regarding competence and how to work within a factory. And I have also engaged my maths and english through learning mechanical principals, intergration and differentiation, and more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
At times, there is a lack of tutors, which can cause a bottle neck in your progress. For example, if a tutor is not in for a few weeks, it will be a major set back as each day is an incredibly vast amount of progress made, making the amount of catch-up work overwhelming. However, besides from that, the way that the college work is set out, structured and organised is quite well in my opinion.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
In my time here in my apprenticeship, my employer has ensured that meetings are constantly held to address any issues that we face here in the college and provide us with the support required. When there was a suggestion that we faced against here at the college, our employer stepped in immediately and ensured that we have a peaceful and good experience here at the college. Furthermore, I have had to seek help from my employer due to mental health issues, and I have been provided with counselling and help within the college.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider will always be looking out for us to ensure that we are able to work to the best of our abilities so that we are in a comfortably challenging environment and that we are able to work towards completing our apprenticeship to the highest standard that we can.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Through my training provider, the classes that I have been taking part in are all crucial within my role at the work place. For example, the understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. As a machinist, this is a crucial for my role, as I work around the various machines and applications, as well as the many different areas.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
At my work place, there are many social activities and networking events. Here are a few examples. When BMW is releasing a new model for their vehicle, they will host a showcase of that vehicle for a set amount of days and let people come and even sit in the vehicle. Every Wednesday, there is a football match that is hosted at the work place and all and any are able to take part within this football match. Another event is the bake sales. Employees are able to bring their cakes and different desserts to sell at the bake sale to raise money for charities, organisations and more. It helps to connect the employees within the work place and create a friendly work environment.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BMW Group is a well paying apprenticeship. Furthermore, it opens a vast window into the world of engineering and provides the apprentice to an incredible amount of benefits and pros for future job opportunities. Having an engineering qualification from a company, like BMW, will hold a lot of value due to the very promising reputation of BMW Group as the manufacturer of Mini and Rolls Royce as well as more. BMW Group are very likely to offer you a well paying job at the end of the apprenticeship. The benefits are very good as well, such as a discounted data plan with EE, and a car scheme, which grants a new car with 0 miles on a monthly plan. It is a great experience, and an incredibly valuable one.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
The advice that I have is to not worry about your qualifications upon application, so long as you meet the requirements. The interview for BMW is to look upon you as a person, to look at your character, and to see your passion and your strive for engineering. Rather than being focused on numbers, you will be taken through four stages of interview that test your team working skills, your individual skills, and your presentation skills and how you present yourself as a person. A good character goes a long way.
